Original Fight 19

Mega Man 1 Robot Master Battle Royale

The Mega Man 2 Battle Royale brought a lot of positive feedback, so we’re going to continue going forward with robot master battle royals, and we’re going to continue going forward by going back–back to where it all began.

The first Mega Man had a lot of kinks that got ironed out as the series went on. There was no charge, there was no slide, there was no Rush, there were no E tanks, there was a point system, you could toggle the pause menu to increase the damage of your projectiles, and when you fell you fell like a brick without any acceleration.

And there were only six robot masters instead of the usual eight.

Yeah, in the remake Mega Man: Powered Up they added in Oil Man and Clock Man to bring the number up to eight, but in the classic NES game there’s just six and those are the six involved in today’s fight.

The Rules

The fight takes place in a neutral, giant-sized version of your standard Mega Man boss room. Anything unique or special about a robot master’s boss room, such as it having spikes or water or a conveyor belt, is removed.

Robot masters are assumed to have knowledge of how their teammates work and their strengths, weaknesses, and abilities.

Cut Man, DLN-003

Cut Man’s Stage

Cut Man Banter

Cut Man Is The Volnutt

He’s Mega Man’s first brother, my personal favorite robot master, and the Volnutt of this contest. Cut Man was built by Dr. Light as a forestry robot. His ceramic titanium blade, housed on his head until he throws it, can chop down several trees in one pass.

He fights by throwing his cutter, catching it, then throwing it again. He’s…not the most powerful robot master. Since he takes three damage from the mega buster where most other robot masters take one and has severe limitations on his combat ability due to having to catch his cutter before he throws it again, Cut Man is traditionally the first robot master players go after.

Cut Man has the personality of a polite, naive child–which is interesting because he’s the third oldest of all the robot masters. He’s a cute, kindhearted robot. If Rock didn’t become Mega Man, he would have become Mega Man.

It’s a damn shame he has no chance of winning.

Cut Man vs Weapons

Cut Man takes one unit of damage from rolling cutter, one unit of damage from thunder beam, and two units of damage from hyper bomb.

His secondary weakness is fire storm which deals three damage to him.

His primary weakness is super arm which deals fourteen units of damage–the most of any weakness.

Cut Man is immune to ice slasher.

Guts Man, DLN-004

Guts Man’s Stage

Theme of Guts Man

Guts Man Banter

Guts Man is one of the most iconic robot masters. He may even be the most iconic robot master. With all his brothers having bodies similar to Mega Man, he stands out by looking like a  roboticized Donkey Kong.

Guts Man was built for construction work and has a very unique weapon that’s never been repeated in the Mega Man series–the super arm. The super arm gives Guts Man superstrength. He can pick up and throw boulders and stun robots by jumping and creating shockwaves. Mega Man fights Guts Man in a quarry which benefits Guts Man as he every time he makes a shockwave, a fresh boulder falls that he can catch and throw.

It sounds awesome, but when you get it as Mega Man all you can use it for is to pick up boulders. It’s the Mundane Matt weapon.

Super arm is still better than top spin. Top spin sucks.

Guts Man is a hard working blue collar type of guy, simple and dependable. He’ll take those long nights, impossible odds. He’ll keep his back to the wall.

If it takes all that to be just what he is, he’s gonna be a blue collar Man.

Guts Man vs Weapons

Guts Man takes one unit of damage from super arm, rolling cutter, and thunder beam.

His secondary weakness is fire storm, but it only deals two to him.

His primary weakness is hyper bomb which deals ten damage.

Guts Man is immune to ice slasher.

Ice Man, DLN-005

Ice Man’s Stage

Ice Man Banter

If Guts Man is a roboticized Donkey Kong, Ice Man is a roboticized ice climber.

With the ability to lower temperatures to 200 degrees below zero, Ice Man was created to explore extreme environments. This not only meant extremely cold environments like the polar regions but extremely hot environments as well. Though he’s not as powerful in hot environments as he is in cold ones, he can still function very well just by cooling the area around himself.

To give you an idea of the adorable parka wearing robot’s power, Freeze Man, who was made in Mega Man 7, holds great respect for Ice Man even though Ice Man is outdated compared to himself.

Here’s a fun fact–temperatures of 200 degrees below are used in cryotherapy. So Ice Man can double as a cryotherapist. He’s a handy little dude, isn’t he?

Ice Man’s special weapon is called the ice slasher. He breathes on the air, freezing it and (somehow) turning it into razor sharp, ultra-cold projectiles. In a fight, Ice Man jumps up and then slowly floats back down like a snowflake shooting three ice slashers. The speed of these ice slashers increases as he takes damage.

Ice Man’s personality is that of a soldier with a commander talking to him through a connection. He basically LARPs as Solid Snake.

I believe this is known as being a “chuuni.”

Ice Man vs Weapons

Ice Man takes one unit of damage from fire storm and two damage from rolling cutter.

His secondary weakness is hyper bomb which deals four damage.

His primary weakness is the thunder beam which deals ten damage.

Ice Man is immune to super arm and ice slasher.

Bomb Man, DLN-006

Bomb Man’s Stage

Bomb Man Banter

In Japan, he’s actually called Bomber Man. I wonder if the name change had anything to do with a certain game that was trying to make it big in America around the same time as Mega Man?

Bomb Man was created by Dr. Light for demolitions work (big surprise there), and in Powered Up, mining. He can create bombs out of nothing (again, very much like a certain game) and throw them. Though they’re depicted as the classic cartoon bombs–round, black, and with a fuse–they don’t explode on a timer, they explode when they hit a target.

Bomb Man fights pretty much like a poppy bros. from Kirby. He jumps over his target while throwing bombs down at them.

If Cut Man is the kid of the team and Guts Man the adult, Bomb Man is the teenager. He’s cocky, headstrong, and likes to show off. Just look at the way he bounces that bomb on his shoulder for his idle animation. The dude is begging to get wrecked by fire storm.

Bomb Man vs Weapons

Bomb Man takes one damage from hyper bomb.

His secondary weakness is a tie between thunder beam and rolling cutter, they both deal two damage.

His primary weakness is fire storm which deals four damage.

Bomb Man is immune to super arm and ice slasher.

Fire Man, DLN-007

Fire Man Stage

Fire Man Banter

Fire Man wasn’t created to put out fires, but to start them.

Dr. Light made Fire Man to incinerate garbage at a waste disposal plant. Why this necessitated him having a head and legs and being alive is unknown. With his fire storm weapon, he’s capable of projecting flames as hot as 8,000 degrees. That’s worth about two blast furnaces, assuming fahrenheit. Why Dr. Light needed a janitor robot to be this powerful is another unknown.

He has a very simple fighting strategy:

First, shoot fire.

Then, shoot fire.

And lastly, shoot fire.

If you think beating Fire Man is just a matter of jumping over his shots, think again. His shots leave little plumes of fire behind. If you avoid the fire just by jumping straight up, you’ll hit the plume when you come back down.

Fire Man has the personality of an old-fashioned tokusatsu superhero. His heart burns with the fires of justice. His hot blood calls him to incinerate evil.

He also likes yelling FIREEEEEE a lot.

Fire Man vs Weapons

Fire Man takes one unit of damage from hyper bomb, fire storm, and thunder beam.

His secondary weakness is rolling cutter, though it only deals two damage.

His primary weakness is ice slasher which deals four damage.

Fire Man is immune to super arm.

Elec Man, DLN-008

Elec Man’s Stage

Elec Man Banter

Elec Man’s Theme Sounds Like Faithfully And Other Songs

Elec Man was created by Dr. Light to regulate the voltage of nuclear power plants. Arrogant and conceited, Elec Man is kind of a dick who won’t shut up about how powerful and beautiful he is.

There’s one in every family.

It doesn’t help that he has the power to back up his arrogance. As the youngest of the Mega Man brothers (until the DLN numbers started back up in Mega Man 9), he’s the most advanced and features the fastest processing speed and agility. He’s so fast that Wily used him as a model for Quickman in Mega Man II.

Like Fire Man, his fighting style is simple but effective. He shoots lightning at his opponent, and then he does it again. From the perspective of Mega Man, he’s easily the strongest robot master. His thunder beam deals ten units of damage to Mega Man per hit. It’s so powerful that when Mega Man gets it he can use it to blow through stone blocks that normally take Guts Man’s power to move.

If there’s a redeeming quality to Elec Man, it’s that his stage theme sounds kind of like “Faithfully” by Journey so he’s got good taste in music. Though personally I always heard the MASK theme whenever I listened to it. “Masked crusaders working overtime, fighting crime, fighting crime!”

Elec Man vs Weapons

Elec Man takes one unit of damage from fire storm and thunder beam. He takes two damage from hyper bomb.

His secondary weakness is the super arm which deals four damage.

His primary weakness is the rolling cutter which deals ten damage.

Elec Man is immune to ice slasher.

So Who Wins?

The first one to go is Ice Man. It’s way too easy for Elec Man to snipe him with a thunder beam since its able to go through objects and opponents. At ten damage a hit, the moment Elec Man sees Ice Man he’s toast.

Guts Man dies next. He’s too slow, and he doesn’t get his endless supply of rocks in a neutral arena which means he’s the only robot master limited to melee combat. Even if we filled the arena with conveniently placed boulders that isn’t going to help Guts Man much since the thunder beam will easily break them leaving Guts Man without ammo. Guts Man also makes himself a huge target with his shockwave stomp. The guy with the weapon that harms everyone encourages everyone to nail him.

Bomb Man is going to get Guts Man. Bomb Man is Guts Man’s perfect nemesis not only because of his weapon but because he likes to jump around even more than Cut Man. It’s extremely likely he’s going to jump the shockwave and nail Guts Man with a hyper bomb.

Now we’re down to the final four–Fire Man, Cut Man, Elec Man, and Bomb Man. The question is, out of these four who is the most likely to be standing at the end?

It’s Fire Man.

I know. You would think that being the boss with the most points attached to clearing his stage with a weapon known for being incredibly powerful would be the one to take the win, but look at the numbers.

Fire Man can deal 4 damage to Bomb Man,  3 damage to Cut Man, and 1 damage to Elec Man.

Fire Man can take 2 damage from Cut Man and 1 damage from Bomb Man and Elec Man.

Cut Man can deal 10 damage to Elec Man and potentially one-shot him with the return stroke and 2 damage to Bomb Man and Fire Man.

Cut Man can take 3 damage from 3 damage from Fire Man, 2 damage from Bomb Man, and 1 damage from Elec Man.

Bomb Man can deal 2 damage to Elec Man and Cut Man and 1 damage to Fire Man.

Bomb Man can take 4 damage from Fire Man, 2 damage from Bomb Man, and 1 damage from Elec Man.

Elec Man can deal 2 damage to Bomb Man and 1 damage to Cut Man and Fire Man.

Elec Man can take 10 damage from Cut Man, 2 damage from Bomb Man, and 1 damage from Fire Man.

These numbers indicate that Fire Man is the one who stands the best chance of winning. He can deal decent damage to Cut Man and Bomb Man and only has to worry about losing a war of attrition with Elec Man. Elec Man on the other hand can only deal one unit of damage across the board and has to worry about taking a rolling cutter to the face.

It’s going to come down to Fire Man and Elec Man exchanging chip damage until one falls. They’re both very spammy, and while Elec Man is said to be the fastest of the original robot masters that advantage is mitigated by fire storm leaving fire on the ground. It’s going to come down to who is most likely to be damaged by Cut Man and Bomb Man before those two go down. Cut Man is as likely to target Elec Man as he is Fire Man, but the difference is that if he hits Elec Man just once, Fire Man wins. Bomb Man is as likely to target Elec Man as he is Fire Man, but the difference is he deals double damage to Elec Man.

When it comes time for Fire Man to face off with Elec Man, odds are Elec Man will be in worse shape.

Looks like lucky number DLN-007 wins!
