Earth BD’s connection to the Astral light appears primarily through the technological miracle of SPCG, which draws out physical might from latent psychic energy.

Though SPCG could potentially lead to problems if the technology leaked to certain other worlds, Earth BD itself is not a dangerous world and its people use the technology for sport, not warfare.

Description:

On Earth BD, devices fashioned in the form of MMA outfits known as super power combat gear (SPCG) or Beat-Down gear grant those that don them secondary hyperstasis by drawing out the latent psychic power of a person’s fighting spirit.

The precise manifestation Beat-Down gear derived powers depends on a person’s personality. A person with a aggressive, volatile personality may develop the ability to cover their body in flames while a person with a adaptive, quick-thinking personality may develop the ability to summon and control water.

Beat-Down gear can draw out tremendous amounts of power, but they have a weakness in that drawing too much power too quickly will collapse the Astral link. A fighter that uses their Beat-Down gear as a crutch will either lose or quickly learn how to fight without it. Serious danger can also result from a fighter pushing their Beat-Down gear too far. Astral powers are not to be taken lightly. Just look at how much time and effort it takes people like Donald Swift to control their Astral powers.

If you push your Beat-Down gear, it will push back and push back hard. Fighters have broken arms, shattered legs, and have even lost their lives to pushing their gear too far. This is why fighters will tell you that the fighter is always the base upon which is career is built. If you replace that base with gear, bad things will happen. In this respect, the gear of Earth BD is much like the aether drives used by Earth AD and our own universe. It is technology that draws upon the mind for power–and if that mind falters in its control, the power will slip its leash.

On another Earth, the existence of SPCG might be cause for alarm. It might be abused to create super soldiers, but not on Earth BD. Earth BD has its geopolitical tensions well and firmly under control and SPCG are used not in warfare but in sports. In fact, global treaty forbids militaries from using Beat-Down gear.

Fighters in the Beat-Down league are the best-of-the-best. One doesn’t get into the league and get their Beat-Down gear just by walking through the door. An applicant has to pass a battery of tests including a fitness test, sparring test, and written exam. These tests are necessary to separate serious, responsible martial artists from people that just want to have super powers for fun and kicks. Earth BD is very strict about its gear, and fighters found using their gear outside officially sanctioned matches will have their fighting license revoked atop of any legal penalties accrued.

Super powered combat sports are all the rage on Earth BD, the most popular being BEAT DOWN (mostly because it’s the first and so far only super powered combat sport), which has an audience across the multiverse. While Earth BD only seldom interacts with the multiverse, it is aware of it, and there is an exhibition league for fighters from other worlds. Martina Morelli, Diabla, is a noted fan of Beat-Down, and has competed in its exhibitions a few times. She adheres to the rules as much as she is able and doesn’t draw upon any of her Xibalban power. Instead, she uses Beat-Down gear like everyone else, which in her case allows her to manifest light-powers, which are appropriate for someone with her sunny disposition.

Chuck Porter, once the champion of Beat-Down, always the champion to his fans, is now retired, but in his retirement he runs a gym training the next generation of Beat-Down champs.

His daughter Claudette “Claudia,” has potential, but she’s not going to realize that potential so long as she slacks off and keeps her head in the clouds. The road before her is a long and rough one, and if she isn’t tough enough, she’ll be on the receiving end…of a beat down!

Individuals of Note

Claudette “Claudia” Porter

Daughter of Beat-Down champ Chuck Porter, Claudette seeks to follow in her father’s footsteps–the only problem is that her ambitions are beyond her discipline. A lazy day-dreamer, she lacks the drive and concentration of a champion…so far. But she’s young, she’s learning, and she’s got potential.
